What we're doing

TelOptics Corp. is developing and building the first solid-state, sub-nanosecond electro-optic switch matrix on a planar waveguide platform--one that naturally integrates with planar arrayed waveguide DWDM technology as well as other optical functions.

By applying a highly proprietary solid-state switching technology to a low-cost optical material, TelOptics will produce an integrated planar switch matrix using low-cost semiconductor-based processing methods modified to incorporate novel processing technology adopted from a different industry.

Why it's important...and valuable

The TelOptics planar optical switch matrix will have an enormous cost advantage over non-planar switch technologies, and offer solid-state reliability unachievable in MEMS technology. TelOptics' unique combination of low cost plus solid-state reliability will win a leading market share of optical switch subsystems.

In addition to the rapidly expanding market for programmable DWDM multiplexers and distributed optical cross-connects, the TelOptics optical switch matrix is expected to open additional new networking applications. Architectures and system designs will adapt to take advantage of the inherent reliability, compactness and low cost. In particular, entirely new cost-sensitive data networking switching applications will emerge as optical bandwidth increasingly becomes the standard in this huge market as well.

A Distinct Competitive Advantage

TelOptics proprietary optical switching technology, integrated with existing planar waveguide technology, will provide unmatched "demultiplex and switch" capability and reliability. More importantly, it expected to do so at a cost that is dramatically lower than is attainable with existing technologies that defy integration and cost reduction.

Board of Directors

Alexander B. Romanovsky is a founder of the Company and has served as a director since its inception in February, 2000. Prior to 2000, Mr. Romanovsky served as Director of Optical and Mechanical Engineering at Xros, Inc. and managed the prototype development team for the revolutionary 3D micro-mirror optical head used for second generation, large scale, photonic switching technology. Mr. Romanovsky served as Project Manager and developed a planar passive splitter product line at AMP, and managed its transition into production. Mr. Romanovsky served as a Research Scientist working on lasers at the P.N.Lebedev Physics Institute, of the Academy of Sciences in the USSR. He is a naturalized US citizen. Mr. Romanovsky has held senior technical and product development positions at Xros (acquired by Nortel), Lightwave Microsystems Corp., Deacon Research (acquired by Gemfire), AMP (acquired by Tyco) and NIST.

George Ballog is a founder of the Company and has served as a director since its inception in February, 2000. Mr. Ballog has been involved in optical networking technology since 1986, starting with Raynet and Raychem Corp. He served as VP of Marketing and Business Development at Lightwave Microsystems Corp during its early years, and introduced the first LightWeavertm DWDM product. As a marketing executive at Raychem Corp. (now Tyco Electronics), he led the introduction of four families of technology-based products, including the groundbreaking product family of PolySwitch® solid-state over-current protection devices and the LOC-2tm system, the first commercial Fiber-to-the-Curb optical networking system. Mr. Ballog has a BSc in materials science from Penn State, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Fred B. Cox has served as a director of the Company since its inception in February, 2000. Mr. Cox is a founder and served as the Chief Executive Officer of Emulex Corporation from its inception in 1979 until he retired in October 1991. Mr. Cox continues to serve on the Board of Emulex as Chairman. From November 1991 until November 1994, Mr. Cox served as President of Continuus Software Corporation, a developer and marketer of computer software products, and served on its Board until the company's acquisition in December 2000.

Don Lyle has served as a director of the Company since its inception in February, 2000. Since 1983 he has served as an independent consultant to various computer and venture capital companies and as a principal of Technology Management Company, a management consulting firm specializing in high technology companies. Mr. Lyle also serves as a member of the board of directors of Emulex Corporation, Systech Corporation, a data communications company, and Datron Systems Incorporated, a leading provider of remote sensing satellite earth stations, satellite communications systems, and HF and VHF radios to worldwide markets.

Jacob Vigil has served as a director of the Company since June, 2001. In August 2000 Mr. Vigil became the Chief Operating Officer of BrightLink Networks, Inc. which developed innovative on-demand optical switching solutions. Prior to joining BrightLink, Mr. Vigil was president and chief executive officer of Lithics Silicon Technology Inc., a maker of complex integrated custom circuits. Prior to Lithics, Mr. Vigil held key strategic positions including vice president of worldwide operations at Tandem Computers Inc., and senior vice president of engineering and manufacturing at MIPS Computer Systems. Mr. Vigil also briefly managed the architecture and program management lab of Hewlett Packard, and was president of Elxsi, a start-up company developing a multi-processor minicomputer system. Mr. Vigil was also with Burroughs Corporation for over 20 years, starting in manufacturing as a test engineer and later promoted to the engineering development group where he was awarded 8 patents in the area of mainframe CPU design and storage systems. Mr. Vigil was vice president and general manager of Burroughs' peripheral products group and later, the computer systems group.
